This region, the Yucatan Peninsula, was home to the ancient Mayan civilization, and their wondrous constructions remain largely intact to this day.  They are easy to get to, and are to be found in glorious settings.  The closest to Playa del Carmen is in Tulum, where the well-preserved remains of a Pre-Columbian walled city are perched on a cliff, looking out to the Caribbean Sea.  It is just thirty-nine miles south of Playa del Carmen.  A little further is Cobá, and further still Chichen Itza, both marvelous and mystical Mayan ruins surrounded by rainforest.   If you’d like to see the animated version, just a couple of miles south of Playa del Carmen is Xcaret, a wonderful eco-theme park that not only gets you back to nature but also teaches you a few things about the Mayan civilization in a fun way.  Another delightful excursion is to take the ferry across the water to the island of Cozumel for the day, from one beautiful beach resort to another.  For the stouter of heart, just forty-two miles up the road is the tourist Mecca of Cancun, with its spectacular hotels and night-life.
