The local area has some wonderful places to visit.  Right there in Playa is the beautiful bird sanctuary of Xaman Ha, a natural habitat for around sixty different species of colorful tropical birds living in harmony with their jungle surroundings and other animals such as iguanas, butterflies, squirrels, and turtles.  These beautiful birds and the enchanting paths through the jungle are a nature lover’s dream.  Just two miles to the south is the amazing eco-theme park of Xcaret, blending natural beauty, water activities, flora and fauna, and entertaining ways to discover the culture and history of Mexico.  Just forty-five minutes across the water from Playa is the vacation resort island of Cozumel; ferries run back and forth all day long and it makes a perfect day trip for you and friends or family.  Playa Del Carmen is located exactly half way between the exciting tourist Mecca of Cancun and the majestic Mayan archeological site of Tulum perched on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea. It’s approximately forty miles in either direction, take your pick or visit both.  The Yucatan Peninsula is home to many Mayan sites and among the best are Chichen Itza and Coba, both set in the jungle and boasting fascinating and impressive remains from a pre-Colombian past.

Of course a beach destination like Playa has all sorts of activities available to the visitor.  Some of these include snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing trips, boat rentals, golf, horseback riding, yoga, spa treatments, and Spanish lessons.  The rivers of the Yucatan peninsula run underground, often forming caverns or sink holes called ‘cenotes’; these pools are perfect for swimming and diving and add a different kind of attraction that is uncommon in other places and not to be missed.
